The Getting Ahead Committee announced today the launch of a new program to assist individuals living in poverty. “Getting Ahead in a Just–Gettin’–By World” is a 20-week curriculum that assists individuals living in poverty to evaluate their lives and develop and sustain the life skills necessary to survive and flourish in today’s society. The goal is for participants to develop a mental model of their past and create a new future. This new future includes financial stability, stable housing, and employment.
Supported by grants from National Machinery, United Way of Fostoria (Foundation Funds), and Tiffin Community Foundation, “Getting Ahead” class will be every Tuesday from 10am-12pm which will include a light breakfast and lunch.
“Getting Ahead is about helping people find their future stories and discover the joy of being in charge of their learning and their lives“, said Tracey Lawton, one of the Getting Ahead Committee members and Director of the Fostoria Learning Center.
The Getting Ahead Committee was formed earlier this year when the previous Getting Ahead program coordinator retired and is a partnership between six local area organizations: Fostoria Learning Center, St. Vincent de Paul, Salvation Army, First Call for Help, Fostoria Church of God, and Fostoria Church of the Nazarene.
The Getting Ahead Committee members are now accepting applications for the 2019 “Getting Ahead” program, which starts Tuesday, September 10. Application deadline is August 26 and application forms are available from any one of the partner organizations.
